In partnership with the twelve sports of the 2012 Manitoba Power Smart Summer Games, Coaching Manitoba has established a Mentorship program that will support the regional coaches across the province in their preparation for the Games. Working with each sport, a program tailored to meet the needs of their coaches will be created and delivered between 2011 and 2012.
Some examples of what Mentorship programs have been delivered for the 2010 Power Smart Winter Games are:
Badminton – Regional coaches from across the province attended a training camp in Winnipeg with the Provincial Team coach. Coaches observed on floor training sessions as well as took part in class room discussions and learning.
Curling – Coaches from each region attended a workshop in their area. Experienced coaches lead the athletes through on ice training that the regional coaches participated. Sport Science experts also delivered sessions on Sport Psychology, Sport Specific physical training and dartfish skills analysis.
Volleyball – Each of the 7 regions of for Sport Manitoba (Norman, Parkland, Westman, Central, Winnipeg, Eastman, Interlake) were connected with an experienced volleyball coach in their region. The Mentor coach provided assistance and guidance to the Regional coaches in the areas of: developing team selection criteria; notification of team selection; training requirements that meet the guidelines of Long Term Athlete Development; where to access sport science support; and much more.
