Artists Asked to Compete in Games Lead Up

The 2010 Power Smart Manitoba Winter Games are not just about sports. Watercolour artists in the Central Plains region are being asked to compete to provide the signature artwork that will become the Portage la Prairie Host Society's sponsor recognition gift.

"We're looking for something that depicts the Portage area and fits the theme of the Games which is 'Feel the Energy!'," says Diane Sadler, co-chair of the Host Society's protocol committee.

The artwork submitted by local artists will go through a juried competition to become gift given as a unique souvenir to sponsors of the Games, which will be held from March 7-13, 2010 in Portage la Prairie.

Jean Armstrong, manager of the Portage and District Arts Centre, is pleased to be coordinating the juried art competition for the Host Society.

"I am thrilled to be involved in this major event, which ties two very important aspects of our culture together," Armstrong says. "Sports is one form of expression and so is art. I think this is a beautiful marriage of the two. It brings the artists into the Games and gives them a chance to compete, as well."

The requirements:

  • The entrant must be a Portage and district artist and/or have a membership in the Portage & District Arts Centre with local area involvement
  • A watercolour painting, approximate size 760x560 mm (22x30 inches), on 200-lb paper or higher
  • The artwork must be unmatted and unframed
  • The artwork must depict a winter scene with Portage la Prairie flavour, embodying the theme of the 2010 Power Smart Winter Games: “Feel the Energy”
  • Please include a recent biography/background information with the artwork for promotional purposes.

The Host Society reserves the right to reproduce the original in various sizes and quantities. The successful artist will receive a $300 honorarium or a tax receipt for the value of the painting.
